Mamula Island
Travel time from Tivat: about 1.5 hours. Recommended package: 6 hours.
Mamula is a small, round island directly at the entrance to the bay. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Austrians built a fort here which, together with batteries on the opposite shore, could completely block access to the Bay of Kotor.
What It Looks Like
The fortress occupies almost the entire island: a circular wall with casemates and an inner courtyard. From the water it appears to rise directly from the sea, especially at sunset when warm light falls on the stone.
What Is Nearby
Žanjice Bay and its pebble beach are only a few minutes away, and this is where we usually stop for a swim. The entrance to the Blue Cave is a little farther on, making it easy to combine both destinations in one trip.
On the way, we pass Rose, a fishing village with tunnels in the cliffs once used by submarines of the Yugoslav Navy.
