Our Lady of the Rocks
Travel time from Tivat: about 40 minutes. Recommended package: 4 hours.
Gospa od Škrpjela is the only man-made island in the Adriatic. According to legend, sailors found an icon of the Virgin Mary on a reef in the fifteenth century and began dropping stones around it in gratitude. Captured and retired ships were later sunk there as well.
Fašinada
The tradition continues today. Every year on 22 July, the residents of Perast set out in boats at sunset, circle the island and add more stones. This is how the island has survived for more than five hundred years.
What Is on the Island
The island has a domed church and a small museum. Its walls are covered with silver votive plaques left by sailors in gratitude for a safe return. The collection also includes an embroidery on which a local woman worked for twenty-five years, weaving in strands of her own hair.
Nearby is St George, a natural island with a Benedictine monastery and cypress trees. Landing is not permitted, but we sail very close to it.
