Blue Cave
Travel time from Tivat: about 1.5 hours. Recommended package: 6 hours.
The Blue Cave, or Plava špilja, lies on the outer side of the Luštica Peninsula beyond the bay. It is Montenegro's most popular boat trip destination.
Why the Water Glows
The grotto has two entrances and a white limestone seabed. Sunlight enters below the surface, reflects off the bottom and illuminates the water from underneath. This gives it an intense blue colour and makes everything in the water appear to glow.
The effect is strongest from morning to midday, when the sun is at the right angle. On an overcast day, the cave looks noticeably less dramatic.
What the Trip Is Like
From Tivat, we cruise past Stoliv, through the Verige Strait and Herceg Novi, around Mamula Island and towards the cliffs of Luštica. The boat enters the grotto, where there is time to swim: the water inside is calm and warmer than the open sea.
On the return journey, we usually stop at Žanjice Bay.
What to Bear in Mind
When there is a strong southerly wind, the cave is closed for safety. If that happens, we let you know in advance and offer another date or route.
